Robert Lindon Baldwin, Sr., MD age 78, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on Wednesday, June 22, 2022. Robert was born November 3, 1943 in Mobile, Alabama to the late L.C. Baldwin and Betty Mae Heath Baldwin. He attended UMS-Wright Preparatory School and Springhill College. He attended University of Alabama where he received his B.S. in Biology and Chemistry. He then attended The Medical College of Alabama at the University of Alabama. He was a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta and graduated with his Doctor of Medicine 1968. He specialized in otology, specifically neuro-otology. He created his own practice in 1993, Baldwin ENT, later known as Birmingham Ear, Nose and Throat Group. He retired from practice in 1999. He founded a non-profit in 1991, The Alabama Ear Institute, where he later served as President and Board Chair. The Ear Institute was instrumental in newborn hearing testing becoming one of the standard newborn tests. The Ear Institute opened the Alabama School for Hearing, serving children, ages 3-5 years, who are learning to hear and speak who will be mainstreamed into public or private schools.
Later, Dr. Baldwin returned to school and received is M.A. in Public and Private Management from Birmingham-Southern College in 2003. During his time at Birmingham-Southern he became active in lobbying to abolish the death penalty in the state of Alabama. He was active in the Kairos Prison Ministry at a maximum-security correctional facility as a volunteer assistant Chaplin. He also published a book, Life and Death Matters: Seeking the truth about capital punishment.
Beyond his professional career he was also passionate about his faith. He was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He loved Alabama football and loved taking his children and grandchildren to football games.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leon C. Baldwin, his mother, Betty Mae Heath Baldwin and his step-mother, Kathleen Baldwin
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia Ann Watwood Baldwin, his son Robert L. Baldwin Jr., his daughter, Anne Heath Baldwin-Burgess, his grandchildren: Taylor Baldwin, Robert (Bo) L. Baldwin, III, Alyssa Thompson, Kathryn Thompson, Maven Baldwin-Burgess, Isabel Baldwin-Burgess, and Leah Thompson, and his sister Margaret (Baldwin) Serio.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, the 28th of July 2022 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church beginning at three o'clock in the afternoon. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in memory of Dr. Baldwin to Founder’s Place at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church 3736 Montrose Road, Birmingham, AL 35213
