Reba Eugenia Hammond, age 100, died and went to be with the Lord March 27, 2025. She was born in Elmore county, Alabama on May 12, 1924, and preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Ethel Hammond, her sisters Dorothy Hammond Jones and Edith Libson Hardy, and her brother, Lester Marvin Hammond. Reba had a remarkable life, living through the Great Depression and putting off college to work for the WWII war effort at a gun powder factory in Talledega county, then attending and graduating from the University of Alabama with a degree in journalism. She worked for newspapers in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham before becoming director of publicity for the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce. After leaving the Chamber of Commerce she spent the rest of her career as a sales agent for New York Life Insurance Company, becoming the third woman in the state of Alabama to receive her CLU license. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham, and helped start the First Light ministry at the church that provides for homeless women and children. Reba is survived by her nephews Terry (Pat) Hammond, Bob Hammond, Tim (Liz) Libson, Ted Libson, and David (Beth) Libson; nieces Renita Jones Brunker, Ausie (Charlie) Jones Burns, Peggy (Craig) Hammond Edmonds, and numerous great nieces and nephews, and her longtime friend, Patricia Ann McBryde, and other friends. The family would like to thank her caregivers: Lisa Billingsley, Dedria Hawkins, Lateefah Moseley, and Mary Witherspoon, Oasis Hospice, and the staff of Aspire at Cahaba River. There will be a graveside service for her on Thursday, April 3, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Pine View Memorial Gardens, 2325 Holtville Road, Wetumpka, AL, to be followed the next day, Friday, April 4, 2025 with visitation at 10:00 and memorial service at 11:00 AM at Valley Chapel, 1800 Oxmoor Road, Birmingham, AL.
