Norma Elizabeth Butterworth-McKittrick, an accomplished author, editor, and educator, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of literary contributions and a profound impact on the lives of many. With over 50 years of teaching and writing, Norma's career was marked by her dedication to educating, community support, the written word and her passion for storytelling.
For over a decade, Norma was an integral part of Southern Living and Cooking Light magazines, where her editorial expertise helped shape the content that readers came to love and trust. She also lent her talents to Crane Hill Publishers, further solidifying her reputation as a skilled editor and researcher.
Norma's contributions extended beyond magazines and newsletters. She played a vital role in the research and writing of several significant works, including “Lighthouse Ghosts”, “Plantation Homes of the James River” and “Steel Ships and Iron Men”. Her meticulous research and keen eye for detail helped bring these important historical narratives to life.
In 1997, Norma authored a children's book, a beautifully retold version of “The Nutcracker”. This book remains a cherished classic, captivating young readers with its enchanting story and delightful illustrations.
Norma was also a dedicated educator who found immense joy in teaching. Most recently, she enjoyed teaching 4K classrooms at the Lutheran Church of Vestavia Hills, where she inspired and nurtured young minds with her patience, creativity, and warmth.
Above all, Norma was a loving mother and Nana. She is survived by her three children & their spouses, Jeff & Cheryl, Rebecca & Scott, and Brett & Heather, and her six grandchildren, Warren, Mitchell, Grace, James, Alex, and Landon. Norma's dedication to her family was unwavering, and she found immense joy in her roles as both mother and Nana.
Norma's work has left an indelible mark on the literary world, and her contributions will be remembered and appreciated for years to come. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, students, and all those who had the pleasure of working with her.
