Born on October 22, 1943, Dr. Nancy Allen Hinson went to be with her heavenly father on Friday, April 22, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mildred Eastis Allen and Finley Monroe Allen; her sister, Brenda Allen LaFontaine; and by her son-in-law Robert Woods. She is survived by her daughter, Ashley Allen Woods; granddaughter, Casey Woods; grandson, Bobby Woods; two great grandchildren; and by her lifelong friend Patsy Sims Wallace; and beloved pets, Sarah, Mustard, Annie, and Lefty.
Nancy was born in Birmingham, AL and graduated from Ensley High School. She earned a BS in Education from Auburn University, a Master’s degree in Reading Education from Mercer University, and a Doctorate degree in Educational Administration from the University of Georgia.
Her career in education spanned over five decades. Upon graduating from Auburn University in 1964, she was employed as an elementary teacher by Birmingham Public Schools in Birmingham, Alabama. After teaching at W.J. Christian School, she accepted a teaching position with the Department of Defense in Azores, Portugal. Nancy returned to the states and taught for several years at an elementary school in Coco Beach, Florida.
Nancy became the Curriculum Director for Commerce City School, in Commerce, Georgia, and was promoted a year later to the position of Assistant Superintendent. Returning home to Birmingham, Nancy’s love for education led her to the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Her initial position was in the Office of Educational Development as an Educational Consultant, which lead to her becoming the Senior Educational Consultant, Assistant Professor in the Office of Educational Development, Assistant Professor and Academic Advisor in the Office of Medical Student Services, Program Coordinator/Evaluator for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Minority Medical Education Program, with her career culminating as an Associate Professor and Director of Career Support in the Office of Medical Student Services. She retired in 2007. She was devoted to her medical and pre-medical trainees and facilitated their career development by enhancing their study skills and self-awareness of their “learning type.”
Dr. Nancy Allen Hinson, a person of integrity with a heart of gold made her time on earth worthwhile, offering help to those in need and caring for abandoned and abused animals.
Her friends express sincere appreciation to UAB and Brookwood physicians, palliative care, Dr. Steven Smith, and their staff for exceptional medical care. We also offer sincere appreciation for the last several years of care to her lifelong friend, Patsy Sims Wallace and to Nancy Moore.
Dr. Nancy Hinson will be greatly missed by all who knew her especially those she loved.
Funeral services for Dr. Hinson will commence at one o’clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 29th of April, at Ridout’s Valley Chapel located at 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, Alabama 35209. Friends are cordially invited to visit one hour prior to the service. Immediately following the service, the committal service will be held, via escorted cortege, in Valhalla Cemetery in Midfield, Alabama.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that donations in Dr. Hinson’s name be sent to the Shelby County Humane Society located at 381 McDow Road, Columbiana, Alabama 35051. Services are under the care and direction of Ridout’s Valley Chapel (205-879-3401) in Homewood.
