Merrill was a graduate of Woodlawn High School and Howard College (now Samford University). He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was awarded The Purple Heart. After the military he formed the Merrill H. Cook Insurance Agency. He also served as President and Secretary of the Birmingham Association of Independent Insurance Agents as well as President of the Birmingham Association of Health Underwriters. He was a member of the Eastern Area Salesmen’s Club and the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Cook was a member of Ruhama Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Birmingham. He served as a deacon at both churches. He loved serving and helping others in many capacities. He volunteered at the V.A. Hospital in Birmingham and participated in numerous mission trips through his churches.
Mr. Cook was preceded in death by his parents, wife Louise A. Cook; brothers: W.I.Cook and Solon W. Cook and 2 sisters: Mildred C. Mayhall and Nellie C. Gentry. He is survived by his daughters: Merrilyn L. Cook and Debbie Wilson (Don); granddaughters: Lindsey Fisher (Paul) and Lauren Kassouf (Jason); step grandsons: Ryan Wilson (Danielle) and Adam Wilson (Hannah); and great grandchildren: Anna and Sara Fisher, James and Lena Kassouf, Luke, Charlie and Lily Wilson. The family would like to thank Edith Sykes for her loving care shown to their father the past 6 years.
The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church of Birmingham on Friday, December 29, 2017 beginning at 10:30 am with the funeral service following at 12 noon. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
