Melinda was in many organizations but what she enjoyed the most was volunteering with groups where she could learn about life. Hospice; Sage at the new Greenhouse Concept Cottages; Birmingham AIDS Outreach, Meals on Wheels for 20+ years; Greater Birmingham Ministries; Evergreen Kindergarten; tutor at McArthur School, Norwood.
Knitting and tea time were ways she connected with people. “Come have tea, with me, at three” was the invitation. She started a knitting group at St Martin’s in the Pines so she could sit, knit, listen and learn about living in a retirement community.
She inherited her “green thumb” from her father. She loved plants and they loved her back
She seemed protected by a shield of positivity and kindness. Buoyed by her faith and commitment to helping people…she demonstrated the importance of showing kindness through words and touch. Others drew strength from her confidence in the goodness of people.
A friend wrote:” I will eternally appreciate her support when we lived in Alabama. I’m not sure how I would have made it without her help.” As we sat during her last days, one friend wondered how many thousands of people had crossed Melinda’s path and left feeling better
Called Sweetheart by her husband Bill; Mom by son Prescott and wife Laura; Gommy by Granddaughters Meghan and Emma. She loved us and we are better because of her love.
There will be a Memorial Service at St Luke’s Episcopal Church, Mountain Brook 11:00 January 7, reception to follow.
As for charities, there is a list above or just take a friend to lunch and listen, maybe have a cup of tea.
