She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Henry Wegener; parents, Bill and Louise Duke; brothers, Bill and David Duke; sisters, Betsy Custer, Kay Wisener, Evelyn Kirsch, and son-in-law, Larry Hurd. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Hurd; son, Hank Wegener (Penny); granddaughter, Jill Wegener; and brother, Taylor Duke (Nellie); along with many other family members and friends which she loved very much. Mary cherished her family and loved getting together with them.
Mary was the oldest of seven children. She helped her parents raise the children. She was very close to her family. Her bond with her siblings was strong.
She married the love of her life, Henry, on May 10, 1952 and sadly lost him 4 days after their 50th wedding anniversary. She and Henry had two children. They were a close family that enjoyed life to the fullest.
She loved travel, camping, lighthouses, shopping, the color red, geraniums, dishes for all occasions, beautiful set tables, holidays with family and holiday decorations! She was a talented seamstress and extremely crafty! Mary was a Christian and a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church in Vestavia Hills. She and Henry missed being charter members by one month in 1959.
A visitation and celebration of life service will be held at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood on Monday, March 4th, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. with the service beginning at 2:00 p.m. Southminster’s Pastor, Tom Bryson, will perform the service. Burial will follow at Acton Memorial Cemetery in Altadena.
Mary will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by many.
