Dr. Mary Pat Hemstreet, 73 years, of Birmingham, Alabama died Friday, October 30th, 2015. She was a native of Pottsville, Pennsylvania and received her B.S. degree from Pennsylvania State University. In 1968, she graduated from Temple University School of Medicine. She then completed her Pediatric Residency at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center and at Duke University Medical Center. In 1973, she received a dual appointment as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Lecturer of the School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She spent most of her professional career at Children's of Alabama where she dedicated herself to caring for children with allergies and asthma until her retirement in 2003. While at Children's, she served as Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Director of Division of Pediatric Allergy from 1984-1992; Associate Director of Pediatric Residency training program from 1985 -1992; Associate Director of the Allergy and Immunology Fellowship program from 1991-1998; and Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Division of Pediatric Allergy from 1992-2003. She was well respected by colleagues and students alike. She was known for her tireless dedication to science and was an inspirational teacher and trusted mentor. Most importantly, she was a caring and compassionate physician who devoted her life to providing her patients with the best possible medical care. Her excellence and dedication was recognized with the establishment of the Mary Pat Hemstreet, M.D. Endowed Support Fund in Pediatrics by the Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She was formerly married to George P. Hemstreet III, M.D. and is survived by her son George Philamon Hemstreet IV; daughter Mieke Ann Hemstreet; grandchildren: Philamon Thomas Hemstreet, Mason Brooks Hemstreet, Camden Mountain Hemstreet, Elise McFadden Hemstreet, Austin Thomas Hemstreet and Andrew Gabriel Hemstreet; and sister Diane Elizabeth Brown. Visitation will be held on November 5th from 2:00pm-3:30pm at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Birmingham with a funeral Mass at 3:30pm and Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers she has requested donations to Doctors Without Borders , Covenant House or the National Multiple
Scleroses Society.
