Martha F Walker

Martha Lou Fagan Walker, 86, passed away in her home, after an extended illness. She was born in Ft. Worth, Texas, to Rev. and Mrs. J.W. Fagan, Sr. She also lived in Laurel, Mississippi, and Pell City, Alabama, before attending Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham, Alabama, and graduating from Judson College, Marion, Alabama.

Martha Lou married Rev. Harris Gerald Walker of Birmingham in 1946, and served with him in ministry in Kentucky, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Indiana. She was an accomplished musician.

Mrs. Walker received her Master's Degree in Education from Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana, and attended UAB for her post graduate studies. She had a productive career in vocational counseling and as a Program Specialist for Birmingham City School System.

Until recent years, Mrs. Walker was active in many facets of First Baptist Church, Birmingham, and as an officer in the Samford Auxiliary (now Legacy League).

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Walker Ministry Scholarship, Samford University, 800 Lakeshore Drive, Birmingham, AL 35229 are suggested.

Mrs. Walker is predeceased by her husband, Dr. H. Gerald Walker; 2 sisters, Estelle Fagan Polk and Mary Elizabeth (Bettye Dee) Fagan Gann.

She is survived by one daughter, Cynthia Walker Watts (Stanley), Gainesville, Fla; 2 granddaughters, Daria Parker Wilson (Stephen) Mobile, AL, and Tara Parker Strickland (D.J.) of Birmingham; triplet great grandchildren, Grant, Jade, and Lauren Wilson; one brother, J.W. Fagan, Jr. of Laurel, MS; one sister, Sarah Jo Fagan Smith (Rev. Byron), Montgomery; one sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Walker Funderburg of Birmingham; one brother-in-law, Billy Austin Shepherd of Rock Hill, SC; and many loving nieces and nephews.

The family expresses gratitude to her caregivers Jackie Rogers and Carolyn Branch as well as Vitas Hospice.

Visitation will be 6-8pm on Monday, August 20 at Valley Chapel, 1802 Oxmoor Road, and before the service on Tuesday, August 21, from 12:00–1pm at Mountain Brook Baptist Church, 3631 Montevallo Road, Birmingham, AL. The service will be at 1pm, Dr. James Moebes officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Mausoleum, 600 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
