Manly Eugene Moor, Jr. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his parents Manly Eugene Moor and Nell Pulliam Moor, and the love of his life and wife of 65 years, Anne Simms Beddow Moor. Gene was born on April 28, 1923 and grew up in Birmingham. His innate leadership and desire for excellence were demonstrated early on as an Eagle Scout at the age of 14 and as senior class president of Ramsay High School. After graduating from high school he attended Auburn, where he was on both the swim and the golf teams. He served as president of his fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon. World War II began, and Gene left Auburn in 1942 to serve as a flight instructor in the U.S Army Air Corps. On October 10, 1944 he married his childhood sweetheart, Anne. They returned to Auburn where he graduated with a degree in Industrial Management in 1947. Gene began his banking career at First National Bank of Birmingham, which later became AmSouth, and is now Regions. He was president of First National Bank of Birmingham and retired in 1988 as Vice Chairman of the Board of AmSouth Bank. In 1964, Gene joined the Board of Directors of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. He was elected Chairman of the Board in 1968 and continued to serve as Chairman until 2014. In 2001, Blue Cross recognized Gene's service by dedicating its new corporate headquarters naming it the M.E. Moor, Jr. Corporate Center. He cherished his years at Blue Cross and the lifelong friendships that he made. A continuous leader in business, Gene also served the civic community as Chairman of United Way, President of the Community Chest, Corporate chairman of the United Negro College Fund, Treasurer of the Girl Scout Board and Y.M.C.A. In addition, he served as Chairman of the Birmingham Post Office Postal Customers Council and Finance Chairman CHM, Heart Fund, The Salvation Army Advisory Board, Boy Scouts Board of Directors, Birmingham Downtown Improvement Association, Birmingham Centennial Corporation, Downtown Action Committee, Alabama Chamber of Commerce and Operation New Birmingham. Gene was humbled by his induction into the Alabama Business Hall of Fame in 2006 and also in 2009 as he was honored with the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, the highest recognition bestowed upon an Eagle Scout. Gene was a member of Independent Presbyterian Church, The Birmingham Rotary Club, The Beaux Arts Krewe (1982 King), The Redstone Club, The ROMEO'S, The Marauders Dog Fight, Mountain Brook Club, Shoal Creek and The Club. Known to his family as "Mo", Gene was an avid golfer to say the least. Golf was a passion from an early age, and he won a multitude of club championships and shot his age on a number of occasions. His lowest round was 63. He carried himself on the golf course like he did through the rest of his life; with quiet dignity. His strength of character, his gentle spirit, his dry wit and his smiling eyes will be missed by all that knew him. Gene is survived by his children, Dr. Manly Eugene Moor III (Vera), Mr. William Tillman Moor (Margaret), Anne "Missy" Moor Cassidy (Dick) of Jacksonville, FL and John Matthew B. Moor "Matt" (Leigh Ann).
