Larry Bruce Mantooth went home to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday morning, February 12, 2022. He was surrounded by his family as he passed into his eternal home. Larry is proceeded in death by his parents James Thomas Mantooth and Loraine Patton Mantooth of Bessemer, Alabama, and his brother James Thurman Mantooth of Ballground, Georgia. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 30 years, Lynette Jackson Mantooth, his lifelong partner, best friend, and love of his life, along with his beloved children Greg Alan Mantooth of Lewisburg, Tennessee, Shannon Mantooth Faletra (Tony) of Nashville, Tennessee, Joshua Larry Mantooth (Courtney) of Inverness, Alabama, Lucy Elisabeth Mantooth, 4 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Also survived by his beloved brother Danny Wayne Mantooth (Charlotte) of Athens, Georgia, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
After completing high school in Bessemer, Larry immediately pursued his passion for furniture. He managed various stores until founding the Brass Bed in Homewood, Alabama in 1973, currently known as Mantooth Interiors. His love and passion for the business was evident over the last 49 years, always having a location in Homewood but also in various locations around the city including Roebuck, Huffman and Hoover, Alabama. Larry was his own BRAND and his contagious spirit regarding the business spread to employees and clients who all eventually he called “friend”.
Larry loved all of his children with the biggest of hearts. During the early days of the Brass Bed, he and his son Greg spent years working alongside one another. He enjoyed visits and dinners with his daughter Shannon, who he affectionately called “Missy”. Larry’s second love was golf; playing as if it were his job. He mentored Josh at a young age to also love the game. He enjoyed watching him play, and in his final days they spent time together watching PGA. His Lucy was the twinkle of his eye, being that she came so late in life, she completed him.
Larry fought a courageous battle with Interstitial Lung Disease since 2020. He fought to stay with us every day. Someone once said, “Some people are too great to leave us all at once, because the world would shift so drastically. So, they leave us piece by piece, so we can absorb and handle better.” That was Larry Mantooth. To know him was to love him and to be loved. He never met a stranger. The best enjoyment of Larry’s last years was spending the late afternoons at Mantooth Interiors meeting new and old clients. If you got that opportunity, consider yourself one of the lucky ones.
A public Memorial Service and Celebration of Larry’s life is to be conducted at Noon on Monday, the 21st of February, at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church located at 1114 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, Alabama 35209. For those not able to attend, the livestream may be viewed at https://youtu.be/5ELbF1zXvvE. Immediately following the service, friends are cordially invited to the reception from one o’clock in the afternoon until three o’clock in the afternoon at Mantooth Interiors located at 2813 18th Street South, Homewood, Alabama 35209.
