Kathryn “Kitty” Hopping David, 79, of Birmingham, traded her Auburn “Eagle Wings” for “Angel Wings” on the 12th of October 2019. As one of her friends said, heaven became a little more exciting that day. Kitty was born on the 10th of March 1940, in Birmingham to the late Charles and Kathryn Hopping, where she attended Ensley High School and U.A.B. Kitty attended Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church and was very devout in her faith. She had an enormous capacity for love, fun, and joy never wanting to miss anything. She was the kindest, most selfless person to all she knew, loved everyone unconditionally and never met a stranger. Kitty loved her Auburn Tigers and spent Saturdays in the fall in her favorite Auburn paraphernalia with family and friends cheering the tigers to victory. The AU players nicknamed her the “Eagle Lady”. Many remember her giving spirit and all of the “famous fudge” she made for everyone in Birmingham and New York, especially at the Today Show where she earned the title of “Fudge Lady”. She loved to travel and her favorite trips were to Disney World with her grandchildren.
Kitty was preceded in death by her parents, her son Donald R. David, Jr., and her granddaughter Kathryn Anne David. She is survived by her children: Dia S. David and David D. David (Athena); her sister Joan Hopping; the loves and true joy of her life - her grandchildren Kiersten David and Dylan David. This steel magnolia was dearly loved by many and will be sorely missed.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family on Thursday the 17th of October 2019 from eleven o’clock until twelve o’clock in the morning with a Mass of Christian Burial following at twelve o’clock in the morning, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 1720 Oxmoor Road in Homewood.
The Rite of Committal will immediately follow, via an escorted cortege, at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham.
In lieu of customary remembrances, Kitty’s family asks that memorial contributions in her honor be directed to the UAB Alzheimer’s Research at uab.edu@alzheimers .
