Karyl Kesmodel-Rice, age 65, of Birmingham, AL passed away peacefully at the end of the Lord's day right before December 9, 2013. She was a lifetime member of Independent Presbyterian Church, and attended Stetson University, Birmingham-Southern College, and earned her MFA in Theater Arts from the Dallas Theater Center of Trinity University. In her youth she cared deeply about theater, and worked diligently in the local opera troupe and at the Birmingham Children's Theater Center as a costume designer and director where she influenced many young students. Her passion for life and avid curiosity led her towards many interests over the years, including playing the piano and guitar, reading classical poetry, singing folksongs with friends and family, chatting with and finding new friends online, Chinese culture and martial arts cinema, astronomy, and sci-fi films and novels. She is preceded in death by her father, Dr. Karl F. Kesmodel Jr and her aunt Lillian Cummings. She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Betty Amidon Kesmodel, her sister, Beth Stewart, her brother, Roy Kesmodel, her daughter, Cheryl Rice, 4 nieces and nephews, and countless other friends and relatives, all of whom she loved dearly. She will be remembered as a kind, generous soul full of wit and unconditional love. The family would like to extend special thanks to Gentiva Hospice, Right at Home, and friend Terry Hofammann for their incomparable love and care. The memorial service will be at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, December 17th, at the chapel at Kirkwood by the River, 3605 Ratliff Rd, Birmingham, AL, 35210.
