Mrs. Julia Hausman Bradley the loving wife of Dr. Merrill Northington Bradley passed away on June 1, 2022. She was born in New York City in May 1923, the daughter of Mary Gleason Hausman and Alfred Hausman. She grew up in Bayonne, New Jersey. After graduating high school, she went to school at St. Peter’s General Hospital School of Nursing, in New Brunswick New Jersey and passed the Nursing Board exam in December 1944. She enlisted in the Army Air Force in June 1945 and served 2 years in the 4136th AAF based in Dunellen, NJ as an Operating Room Nurse. She earned the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. After her discharge with Commendation, she continued her education at University Hospital of Cleveland (Case Western Reserve) where she graduated in September 1949 as Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. She then moved to New York City to work at Roosevelt Hospital as a nurse anesthetist, where she met Merrill, who was then working as an intern/resident in surgery. They married and then move to San Francisco in 1956, while he served in the Navy as a surgeon on the USS Bon Homme Richard.
After his tour of duty they moved to Birmingham where she raised four children. She was a devoted wife, mother, and later grandmother. She was a parishioner at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Homewood for many years. She loved to cook and to travel. After her husband retired in 1991 they travelled the world visiting Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Australia, China, Japan, and Canada. She especially loved spending time at her home in Snowmass, Colorado, where she enjoyed many cherished Christmases with her family and summers with Merrill.
Together with her husband she gave generously to St. Vincents’ Foundation and other charities in Alabama.
She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Dr. Merrill N. Bradley; her sons Merrill N. Bradley Jr. (Yelena) and Thomas Lyons Bradley (Joanne); her daughters Dr. Mary Allen Bradley, and Julia Bradley Rowe (Stephen); her grandchildren Julia Rowe Cullimore (Jeremy), Marguerite Rowe Morris (Henry), Stephen Bradley Rowe, Rose Teresa Bradley (Beau), and Christopher Lee Bradley; and her great grandson Alvah Theodore Cullimore.
The family wants to give special thanks her care givers Donna Carroll, Jessica Wells, Ashley Quinn, Minnie Smith, Vanessa Gratton, and Michelle Coy. Also to the nurses with Hope Hospice: Hillary Moore, Amanda Clements, and Shayna Nehring. The family also wants to recognize Danberry at Inverness for its wonderful facility, excellent staff, and caring residents.
In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to the Julia Hausman Bradley Fund for the LIMA Foxtrot program at Lakeshore Foundation supporting injured veterans and their families. Or if you prefer you can send flowers or a note to someone you love and brighten their day in honor of Julia.
A family memorial service will be held at a later date.
