Judy Camp Miller, age 70 of Mountain Brook, passed away July 16, 2012 in her home surrounded by her family after a prolonged struggle with pancreatic cancer. She was born February 3, 1942 in Rome, Georgia to William and Eva Camp but has been a fixture in the local community since 1965.
Judy will be missed most by Herbie Miller, her childhood sweetheart and husband of 48 years. She is also survived by her daughter Leslie Franco, son-in-law Paul and their sons Max and Justin, all who reside in Atlanta, GA, as well as son Scott Miller and daughter-in-law Kelly of Birmingham. She also leaves behind her brother Lovell Camp and his wife Mary of Atlanta, GA, sister-in-law Ilene Linton and her husband Roger of Huntsville, AL, and sister-in-law Joyce Vincent and her husband Alan of Birmingham. Judy will also be missed by many nieces and nephews and one great-nephew, all of whom she adored.
Judy worked as a high school biology teacher after receiving her degree from Shorter College in Rome, GA then taught at Shades Valley High School for three years upon relocating to Birmingham. Judy was dedicated to her family first and foremost and opted to give up her teaching career to concentrate on raising her own children, Leslie and Scott. She also found the time to support the causes of organizations that were important to her. She was one of the Founders for the N.E. Miles Jewish Day School, where she worked tirelessly for years, as well as a lifetime member of Hadassah and a member of the Temple Emanu-el Sisterhood. She also served on the Temple Emanu-el Board for one term.
Even during her cancer treatments, Judy managed to bring joy to all she encountered. She "walked in with a smile and came out with a smile" despite any personal discomfort she may have experienced. Being a grandmother was definitely the role Judy loved most though, often referring to grandsons Justin and Max as the "loves of her life".
"Bubbe" will be missed not only by those who knew and loved her, but also by the casual acquaintances who were touched by her positive attitude, kindness, and generosity.
Funeral services will be held in the Sanctuary of Temple Emanu-el on Wednesday July 18, 2012 at 1:00 pm, followed by a graveside service at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rabbi Grafman Endowment Fund at Temple Emanu-el.
