John Steven “Steve” McTaggart, 85, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. Steve was born on October 11, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan and spent the majority of his adult life in Florida and the mountains of North Georgia.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents: Gladys and Joe McTaggart; his step-father Donald Howard; and his brother Butch McTaggart. He is survived by his wife, Cindy McTaggart; his daughter Kim Burnett; his son, Eric McTaggart; his grandsons, Trevor Burnett and Taylor McTaggart; his brother, Richard (Dick) McTaggart; his brother-in-law, Paul Scherring; and his son-in-law, Gerald Burnett.
Steve was a veteran of the United States Navy and spent the majority of his tenure there in the Hospital Corps. He was an avid outdoorsman and had a passion for sailing, piloting small aircraft, hunting and fishing. He loved shooting his guns and was an excellent marksman. He was also an accomplished billiards player having honed his skills as a young adult in Detroit.
Steve was a wine connoisseur and loved discussing with you the virtues of a good bottle of Cabernet. He got great enjoyment out of listening to “classic” Country music. Steve also had a special affection for all his animals on the farm and they always seemed to respond to him in kind.
Steve never met a stranger. He and Cindy’s door was always open to neighbors and any friends and acquaintances who happened to be in town or just passing through.
Steve will be remembered for his love of family, friends and close relatives and his selflessness when it came to someone in need.
In lieu of flowers, Steve would have preferred that you make a donation in his name to the Tunnel for Towers organization, serving our nation’s fallen and injured veterans and first responders @ Donate to Tunnel to Towers Foundation (t2t.org).
