John W. "Jack" Barr

Barr, John W. "Jack", age 82, of Vestavia Hills, AL, died on Friday, April 27, 2012. Jack was the son of Courtland H. Barr and Edna Hurlock Barr of Los Angeles, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, C. Hilyard Barr, also of Los Angeles. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was a long-time resident of Los Angeles, a graduate of Marshall High School and a student of L.A. City College. He lived in Vestavia Hills, AL, for 43 years as a very active and generous member of the community, with membership in the following: the Vestavia Hills Exchange Club, the Vestavia Hills Historical Society, the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce, the Poinsettia Men's Club, the Medallion Club, the Vestavia Hills Chapter of the American Cancer Society, and the Leukemia Society of America. His work included being a co-owner of Courtland Laboratories in L.A, CA, a co-owner of The Laboratory in Birmingham, AL, and a consultant for Abbott Laboratories of North Chicago, IL.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, I. Patricia Pergantis Barr, his daughters Leslie Barr Young (James) of Sebastopol, CA, and Nancie Barr Plaia (Sammy) of Vestavia Hills, AL; six grandchildren, Dr. Oliver Sheldon (Brody) of Jersey City, NJ, Dr. Will Sheldon of Oakland, CA, Lowell Sheldon of Sebastopol, CA, Nicole, Jon Paul and Kati Plaia of Vestavia Hills, AL; and great-grandson Grant Sheldon of Jersey City, NJ. He is also survived by niece Hilary Barr Parker (John) of Bainbridge Island, WA; cousins Paige Croll (Claire) of Georgetown, DE, and Hall Barr (Gayle) of Alexander, VA; and sisters-in-law Rosalie Lockhart and Francine Pergantis of Daphne, AL.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made, in his name, to Children's Hospital of AL, Children's Harbor, Inc., of Alexander City, AL, St. Rose Academy of Birmingham, AL, or to your favorite charity.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at 10:30a.m., at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Hoover, AL, with visitations from 9:30-10:30a.m. A private internment will follow. Ridout's Valley Chapel will direct.
