James, known to friends and family as Jimmy, was born on October 8, 1966,
and grew up in Huntsville, Alabama. Upon graduating from Grissom High
School in 1985, he earned a B.A. in English from the University of South
Alabama in 1990. Later he obtained his Juris Doctor from Cumberland Law
School in 1996.
He held many professional roles during his career, including principal of his
own law firm. As an attorney, educator, auditor, and creative writer, Jimmy was
known for his mentorship and sharp insights. His most treasured role was that
of “Pops.”
Jimmy is survived by his dear wife, Jennifer Arthur McMullan and four
children: Army SPC Forrest Taylor McMullan (Dr. Lynn Fogel McMullan),
Juliana Florrie McMullan, John-Philip Arthur McMullan, and Zoe Anne
McMullan. He is also survived by his parents John and Joanne McMullan of
Huntsville and siblings John T. McMullan (Darlene) of Huntsville and Jody
Kallal (Justin) of Cheyenne, Wyoming, as well as Lisa Andrews (former
spouse, dear friend, mother of Forrest) and a host of loving aunts, nieces,
nephews, cousins, and friends.
Jimmy will be remembered by family and friends as a father who led with
laughter and dedicated his time to actively engaging and inspiring his children
who truly enjoyed his companionship.
He was someone who intuitively knew how to connect with everyone in a way
that was encouraging and deeply personal. Jimmy never met a stranger, so
there was always room at his dining table for ten more people. As a collector
of books and knowledge, he always shared his witticisms and good humor
freely, with no shortage of thoughtful zingers.
If you knew Jimmy, your life was richer for it. His curiosity and genuine interest
in others made everyone want to be a part of his world. He certainly wouldn’t
mind if he was also remembered for his premier acting performance (as an
extra) in Space Camp, the movie. He will be deeply missed.
A memorial service to honor his life will be held at Ridout’s Valley Chapel,
1800 Oxmoor Road in Homewood on Friday, October 1, 2021. Visitation
begins at 12:30 p.m. with a service to follow at 2 p.m. The family has
requested that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to the
Birmingham Museum of Art.
