James Comer Malone Jr.

James Comer Malone, Jr. died on August 26, 2012 in Birmingham, Alabama. Jim, as he preferred to be called, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on January 8, 1919. He was raised in Atlanta, Georgia and was active in Boy Scouts of America, earning the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. Jim attended Georgia Tech, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1940.

Following his graduation from Georgia Tech, Jim was a Lt. Commander in the U. S. Navy and served in the Pacific during World War II. He married Jane White in 1942. Jim and Jane moved to Birmingham, Alabama in 1950, where Jim worked for York Corporation before starting his own company, Malone Engineering, in 1954.

Throughout his life, Jim was active in his community, belonging to several professional organizations and social clubs including Ashrae, Society of Automotive Engineers, Newcomen Society, Mountain Brook Club and The Club. Jim was also a longtime member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

Jim was a selfless, jovial and quick-witted man who always sought to ensure the comfort of those around him. He had a great sense of humor and a knack for making friends and family laugh. A consummate student, Jim enjoyed learning new things and working with puzzles and small gadgets as well as complex engineering projects.

Jim was preceded in death by his sister Mary Martin and is survived by his wife of 70 years, Jane; his son, James Comer Malone, III (Harriet); sisters, Carolyn Carpenter, Dorothy Yates and Sarah Schulz; granddaughters, Jane Malone Stefanowicz (Eric) and Elizabeth Malone Casement (Michael); and great-grandchildren, Allison Hope Stefanowicz and Eric Michael Stefanowicz, Jr.

Visitation will be held at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church on Wednesday, August 29 at 10:00am with the Funeral Mass following at 11:00am. A luncheon will follow at St. Francis Xavier.
