James Vernon Kidd Jr. "Jim", 83, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2016. He attended Ramsay High School in Birmingham and Sewanee in Tennessee. He is a graduate of The University of Alabama where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Jim served as a Lieutenant in the Army. He later moved to Geneva, Switzerland where he worked as an investment banker for Merrill Lynch. He married Colette Vallier in 1961 and had two children. He returned to Birmingham in 1990 and got remarried to his family friend, Caroline Keith Powell "Cookie" in 1994. In Birmingham, he was often seen around town in coffee shops enjoying philosophical conversations. He enjoyed cooking and was a true history buff. Although he was always noticed for his intelligence, he will most be remembered for his kindness. Jim loved people and was always in search of ways to help others. He spent many years helping Cookie build her art career. He was a member of The Alliance Francaise and hosted a regular gathering for others to practice their French. He always put family first and he will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Caroline Keith Powell Kidd, "Cookie", his children Adelaide and Bruce Kidd of Geneva, Switzerland, and his grandson Josselin Millway Kidd of Paris, France. He is also survived by his stepdaughter Caroline Foweather, (Simon) and step grandchildren David and Anna Foweather. A visitation will be held at The Valley Chapel on Oxmoor Road in Homewood on Monday January, 25th from 9:00 – 10:00. A private family service will follow immediately after at Elmwood Cemetery
