He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in the Pacific theatre during World War II. J.R. was the manager of the welding department at Pullman Standard and retired in 1981. He loved building things, fishing, and gospel music. A lifelong church member, he went on several mission trips with Dawson Baptist to build churches. He and his wife, Betty, taught Sunday School for many years and helped cook and serve meals at the downtown Firehouse Shelter. He was a Mason at the West Blockton Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Hancken Jones, his daughter Elizabeth Jones (Larry) Hicks, grandchildren Robert Austin (Trish) Jones, Jr., Benjamin Moore (Alvita)
Jones, Rachael Hicks (Scott) Jamison, Laura Frances Hicks, and seven great grandchildren.
Visitation for Mr. Jones will be Tuesday, Aug. 18,2015 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Ridout's Valley Chapel in Homewood, AL and the funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM at Valley Chapel. Burial will be at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Hoover, AL.
