Guy Burnard Cofield, Sr, age 86 died on May 12, 2011. He was a native of Lineville, Al, a graduate of Auburn University and he completed the Public Utility Executive Course at Georgia Tech. He retired from Alabama Power Company in 1988 as manager of procurement after 39 years of service. Mr. Cofield was a long time member of Highlands United Methodist Church where he served as an usher for over 30 years. He was a member of the Hugh Comer Sunday School Class and later the Marvin Williams Class. He was past president of the Birmingham Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Purchasing Management Association of Alabama (now Institute for Supply Management) and a Past National Chairman of the Utility Purchasing Management Association. He was a member of the Exchange Club of Birmingham, The Club, Executive Service Corps of Birmingham and a charter member of the Mountain Brook Swim and Tennis Club. His fraternal associations included Sigma Chi social, Delta Sigma business and Phi Kappa Phi honorary. During World War II, he served two years with the 379th Bombardment unit of the Eighth Air Force at Kimbolton, England. In retirement, he enjoyed his grandchildren, traveling, playing golf with the Southern Company Services Golf Group and tennis with the ”First Ball In” and the “Fifty Nine Forever” groups. Other highlights of his retirement included a Tiger Cruise on the Henry Stimson nuclear missile submarine when his son, Guy, Jr. was Executive Officer and participation on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to see the World War II National Monument.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Wiley Cofield and Mavis Anna Stewart; brothers, Arnold Baron Cofield and Joseph Stewart Cofield; sister, Glenn Cofield Steele; daughter in law, Patricia Newell Cofield and nephews, John Scott Cofield and James Randall Cofield. Survivors are his wife of 58 years, Mary Frances Miller Cofield; Sons, CMDR (Ret) Guy Burnard Cofield (Connie Ann) of Virginia Beach, VA and Ronald Miller Cofield, Sr. (Shannon) of Charlotte, NC; sister in law, Phyllis Klinde Cofield of Houston, TX; Nephew Jeffery Stewart Cofield of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Ann-Marie of New York, NY, Paul of Washington, D.C., Stuart of Virginia Beach, VA, Miller, Jr. of Delray Beach, FL, Kristen Di Cristina (Mark) of Atlanta, GA along with Charles, Rebecca, Matthew and Graham of Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends on Monday, May 16, 2011 from 1:00 until 2:00 at Highlands United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 in the sanctuary. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. Rev. Mikah Hudson and Rev. Emily Penfield will officiate. Memorial donations may be made to Highlands United Methodist Church, 1045 20th Street So., Birmingham, AL 35205. Services are under the direction of Ridout’s Valley Chapel (879-3401) Homewood, AL.
