Grace was a native of Taylor County, Georgia and graduated from Butler High School. She attended the University of Georgia - Atlanta Division. She was employed by Colonial Stores in the accounting department for ten years. She married Thomas McKenzie Barnes and moved to Birmingham in 1954. Thomas and Grace started Building Service Company in 1954 and Ans-o-phone of Birmingham later that same year. She was a pioneer for working women and continued to be involved in the operations of Ans-o-phone until 2014.
Grace was a long time member of Dawson Memorial Baptist for 35 years before moving to First Baptist Church of Birmingham where she was in charge of the flower ministry for the sick and shut-ins. She is now a member of Vestavia Hills Baptist Church where she was active in Sunday school and helped with delivering meals to class members that were sick and shut-in. She was a long time member of the Vestavia Hills Garden Club as well as the Floribunda Garden Club.
She is survived by her son Millard McKenzie Barnes (Lynn) of Vestavia Hills and four grandsons, Millard McKenzie Barnes, Jr., Stephen McClellan Barnes, William Stewart Barnes and Andrew Thomas Barnes. She is survived by two sisters Mary Nell Goodwin and Dean Andrews; and numerous nephews and a niece.
Service will be held Friday, July 31st at 11AM at Vestavia Hills Baptist Church. Visitation will be at the church before the service at 10AM. Memorial donations may be made to Vestavia Hills Baptist church or your favorite charity.
