WELCH, FREDA ANN DRISKILL, 89, of Homewood, AL, died on October 5, 2016. Freda was born in Thorsby, AL on Sept. 27, 1927, to Claude C. and Margaret D. Driskill. After graduating from Ensley High School in Jan. 1945, she moved to Washington, DC in Nov. 1945 to work at the Pentagon. There she met her future husband, H.J. (Jack) Welch, a soldier stationed at the Pentagon. Freda was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. She was a member of the PEO Sisterhood and the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, her sister, Louise D. Hogan; her brothers J.T. Driskill and J.M. Driskill; and her son-in-law Michael A. (Tony) Hix.
Freda is survived by her daughter, Vicki A. Welch, Vestavia Hills, AL; her sons, Chris J. Welch, Hoover, AL; Michael H. Welch (Martha), Vestavia Hills, AL; her sister, Virginia D. Ogle, Decatur, GA; her sisters-in-law, Doris J. Welch, Ashland, OH; Carol W. Emminger, Phoenix, AZ; her step-grandchildren, David M. Hix (Jennifer), Gardendale, AL; Lucy Lindley, Chicago, IL; Edward H. Lindley, Vestavia Hills, AL; and many other beloved family members and friends.
Freda possessed a wonderful enthusiasm for all life had to offer, but her special joy was travel. She had a great curiosity about the world and its people, and she considered herself fortunate to have visited so many amazing places. Some of her happiest times were her travels with Jack and her children.
Funeral services for Freda will be held on October 8 at 1:00 PM at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1400 Oxmoor Rd., Homewood, AL, Rev. Reid Crotty officiating. Visitation will be between 12:00 and 1:00 PM in the Large Parlor at the church to be followed by a memorial service in the Large Sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, Freda requested donations be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, Homewood, AL, or The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 11005, Birmingham, AL 35202. Please designate donations for the Women's Auxiliary at The Salvation Army.
