Frank was born and reared in Enterprise, AL, by loving parents, Herbert and Claire Gannon, and other close family members whom he honored throughout his life. He participated in the regular childhood activities of school, church, and neighborhood games with his brothers, Herbie and Tim, and growing up buddies. He was a fan of Howdy Doody, Popeye, and played alone for years with those “little green army men.” With some age and a bicycle, he progressed to cutting grass for cash, selling boiled peanuts, delivering newspapers on cold mornings, and topped out his teenage work ethic bagging groceries and mopping floors at the IGA. Water skiing, boating, floating down the river, and some hunting were teenage activities. Frank was a good boy, an excellent student, a loving brother and son.
After graduating from the University of Alabama, Frank served in the United States Navy where he was an Explosive Ordinance Disposal Officer. His service included several tours on an aircraft carrier in the Indian Ocean. After discharge from the Navy, Frank obtained his Master’s of Hospital Administration at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and subsequently held Administrative positions at two St Vincent’s hospitals and later as Chief Executive Officer in Selma, Jasper and finally at HealthSouth Medical Center in Birmingham. He was the owner of Bob’s Power Equipment in Vestavia Hills for ten years before retiring.
Frank and Jan, whom he loved every minute for the next 25 years, were married in 1998 and in addition to his beloved sons, Brad and Grant, he added a daughter, Kathryn Monroe, to his life. Frank had a wonderful sense of humor and loved all children but most of all, his six grandchildren. Oldest son Brad (Kristen) has four children, Mary Isabel, Ellis, Ben and Abby. Younger son, Grant (Millie) has one daughter, Eliza, and Kathryn (Garland) has one son, Griffin. One of his greatest joys as their Pabo was buying their Christmas presents and finding ways to entertain them at the lake where he enjoyed many projects.
Frank is also survived by his brothers, Herbie (Toye), Tim (Kathy) and a host of nieces and nephews. Frank’s family and friends love him forever and are so grateful for the time we enjoyed with him.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday the 17th of June from 11:30 am until 1:30 pm at GM705, 705 Oak Grove Road, Homewood, AL 35209.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Frank’s name be directed to Wounded Warrior Project by visiting www.woundedwarriorproject.org or to the First Baptist Church of Enterprise Church of Enterprise located at 302 North Main Street, Enterprise, Alabama 36330.
