Doris Dodds White died October 26, 2022, at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Carlos White, her father, Roy Leon Dodds, her mother, Burtrice Coker Dodds, her daughter, Sharon Starnes Gay, and her step daughter, Louise White Cunningham.
Mrs. White was the descendant of several of Alabama's prominent pioneer families: John Ash, St. Clair County's first senator and Probate Judge, and after whom Ashville was named; William Pullen, the only Revolutionary War soldier buried in Jefferson County with two military honors ceremonies, and James Rowan, the first European settler to buy land in Jefferson County.
She received her B.A. from Samford University. Mrs. White was a member of Independent Presbyterian Church. She founded and was the first editor of the Birmingham Magazine. Active in Birmingham's cultural and civic life, Mrs. White served as co-chairman of the Museum Ball benefiting the Birmingham Museum of Art, vice president of the Festival of Arts, and co-chairman of its Ambassador's Dinner. She served as first vice president and was a charter member of the Women's Committee of 100 for Birmingham. She was an associate member of the Beaux Arts Krewe of which her husband was a charter member. She acted as president of Harlequins, Silhouettes and Gaities dance clubs. She and her husband Claude were members of the Country Club of Birmingham.
Mrs. White is survived by her dear companion, Joe McCracken, her children, Scott Arnold White (Angi), Therese White Hamilton (Todd) and Elizabeth Dodds White, three grandchildren, Claude Allan White (Anna), Virginia Scott White, and Thomas Chadwick Cunningham (Sophie), Memphis TN, and her step grandchildren, Collin Christopher Hamilton, and John Ross Hamilton. She is also survived by her stepchildren, Claude Carlos White, Jr. (Sallie) and Dr. Thomas Eugene White (Jennifer), Oakland, CA.
A memorial service will be held at Ridout's Valley Chapel, Saturday October 29, 2022 with visitation at 10:00am and service at 11:00am, Rev. Susan Clayton officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Independent Presbyterian Church, 3100 Highland Avenue South, Birmingham, Alabama 35205.
