David S. Dunkle (Dave) of Homewood, Alabama passed on April 17, 2018. Dave was a graduate of Meadville High School (Meadville, PA) where he lettered in football, basketball, swimming and baseball. He graduated in 1966 from the Virginia Military Institute with honors in English and enrolled in the University of North Carolina School of Law where he served on the Law Review graduating in 1969. In 1970, Dave earned a Juris Doctor in Tax Law from Georgetown University. From 1970-72, Dave served as an officer with the rank of captain in the U.S. Army and then entered private law practice in Charlotte, North Carolina.
From 1980 till the present, Dave practiced law in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1984, he wrote the authoritative reference Guide to Pension and Profit Sharing Plans published by McGraw-Hill. Since 1989 till the present David practiced law at Cabaniss, Johnston, Gardner, Dumas and O’Neal where he was a partner.
For ten years Dave coached youth baseball in Homewood’s Joy League and then Homewood Patriot Youth Baseball ultimately serving as President of Homewood Patriot Youth Baseball in 1996-1997. Dave was an avid golfer, alpine skier and pool player. He was a member of Mountaintop Community Church in Vestavia Hills, Alabama.
Dave is survived by his wife Carolyn Dunkle, his children Jack (Sandra), Charles (Katie), Carolyn (Cory) and Henry and three grandchildren Sophia, Nora and Isabella and children through marriage Robert Gibson, Jr. (Tracy), Kevin Gibson (Kristin), Sara Floyd and five grandchildren, who called him Uncle Dunkle, Calvin, Greg, Madison, Tanner and Harper.
In lieu of flowers donations are appreciated in the name of David S. Dunkle to Wounded Warriors, Mountaintop Community Church or a charity of one’s choosing.
A memorial service will take place at 2 pm on Friday, April 20 at Mountaintop Community Church located at 225 Centerview Drive, Vestavia Hills 35216.
