She was a native of Birmingham, AL and a graduate of Phillips High School. She attended the University of Alabama where she was a writer for several campus publications, including the Crimson White. She was a member of Phi Mu Sorority and Mortar Board honor society, and graduated with a degree in Journalism. Connie went on to write for the Progressive Farmer Magazine. Later, she was a ‘Tuesday Lady” at Brookwood Hospital, volunteering there every week for many years; she also was Editor of their Volunteer Newsletter, VIBES. Connie was a charter member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church and Faith Presbyterian Church where at various times she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and served as a Women’s Circle leader. A member of Faith Presbyterian Church for over 40 years, she had been unable to attend worship in recent years because of declining health, but remained a woman of faith and so appreciated the support of the church.
Connie was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her mother Connie V. Doty Spurgeon, her father Samuel Josiah Spurgeon, and her brother Josiah Spurgeon, Jr. She was also preceded in death by two of her sons, Hugh Wylie Brown, III and Timothy Brown. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Hugh Wylie Brown, II; her son Patrick “J.B.” Brown and his wife Renee; her grandsons Ryan and Parker; as well as other family members across the country.
Visitation will be held at Ridout’s Valley Chapel on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 beginning at 10:00 a.m. with the funeral service following at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Alan Carter officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
