She was born to Ben Howard Baker & Annibel Buford Baker on December 13, 1923 and grew up in Clayton, Alabama.
Claire attended Judson College, the University of Alabama, the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham (now UAB), and George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington DC. She was the first woman in the United States to be invited to attend two medical schools, and earned board certification in three fields of pathology. She also served as an advisor to the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.
Claire was married to Howard C. Elliott, Jr. for many happy years, until his passing in 2006.
Claire was mother to five daughters, Patricia E. Simon (Larry L. Jimenez), Janet W. Brewer (John), Ann E. Vaughan (Hal), Ellen Elliott (Arthur Davis) and Catherine E. Garrett (Joseph). She enjoyed spending time with her seven grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two children, Janet and Ellen.
After retiring, Claire enjoyed playing bridge, supporting the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, visiting Navarre Beach, and doting on her grandchildren and later great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Sunday, February 11 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Ridout’s Valley Chapel, Homewood. Funeral services will be held at Ridout's Valley Chapel, Homewood, at 2 p.m. Burial for the family will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Terry Weaver, Cameron Bishop, Danny Garrett, Joseph Garrett, Jr., Jacob Jaszczak, Larry Jimenez and Hal Vaughan.
