Charles Stephen "Steve" Lester

Charles Stephen Lester, known as Steve to his family and friends, passed away on April 1, 2025, at the age of 75. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, on August 20, 1949, to Joseph Oliver and Virginia Watkins Lester, Steve was proud of his roots in the Crestline community. His Watkins family were pioneers of the city and founding members of McElwain Baptist Church, a legacy Steve cherished deeply.

Steve attended Lyman Ward Military Academy and later attended Jacksonville State University. He served his country in the Air National Guard and was involved in the Shriners and the Freemasons. A dedicated and versatile man, Steve’s love for working with his hands was a constant throughout his life. Whether it was fixing motors, taking care of land, or working on construction projects, Steve never stopped staying busy and honing his skills.

An avid outdoorsman, Steve loved spending time on the water and in the woods, often accompanied by his love for animals. He was a passionate wildlife conservationist and a Life Member of the National Rifle Association. Steve won Homebuilders Associate of the Year in 1979, and in 2016, he was honored with the Buddy Berry Lifetime Achievement Award from the Birmingham Homebuilders Association for his contributions to the field.

Known for his sense of humor and fun-loving spirit, Steve was the life of any gathering. His witty jokes and infectious laughter were a constant source of joy to those around him. Steve was a man with a big heart, loved by his family and friends. He lived life without limitations, always bringing light and laughter to those around him.

He was predeceased by his parents and is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn Slaughter Lester; his daughter, Stuart Newgard (Jeremy); his son, Joseph Tyler Lester; his sisters, Susan Branch (David) and Sarah Spradlin (the late Ferris); and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate Steve’s life will be held on Sunday, April 13, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Ridout’s Valley Chapel, 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209.
