Age 92 of Mountain Brook, Alabama, passed away at home Monday, February 20, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 68 years Winifred Martin Muse; sons Charles Amacie Muse, Jr., of Birmingham, Ala., and Lawrence Douglas Muse, his wife Patricia O'Bannon Muse, granddaughter Alexis Muse Osbun, her husband Charles C. Osbun, and their daughters Sophia Louise and Delia Josephine; grandson Amacie (Mace) Lee Muse, II and granddaughter Chloe Dyson Muse, all of Mountain Brook, Ala.; grandson Charles McLaughlin (Mac) Muse and granddaughter Kate-Pride Muse of Atlanta, Ga.; his sister Mrs. Josephine Muse Knight of Tullahoma, Tenn., and brother William Jefferson Muse of Murfreesboro, Tenn. Mr. Muse's sister, Dorothy Muse Bennett predeceased him in 2011.
A native of Tennessee, Mr. Muse was the son of Amacie Lee Muse and Delia Blanche Dyson Muse of Tullahome, Tenn. A 1942 graduate of Tullahoma High School in Tullahoma, Tenn., he served three years in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a B26 bombardier/navigator in the 432 Squadron, 17th Bomb Group, 12th Air Force. In February of 1945 his plane was shot down over Strasbourg, Germany and he and the crew were taken prisoner. After liberation from a German prison camp, Lt. Col. Muse returned to the states and served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve for 30 years. He earned his B.S. in Accounting from the University of Tennessee in 1948. White at UT he was a member of the Zeta Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, class of '46, and remained active in the Pike Alumni Association until his death.
He joined Southern Bell Telephone Co. in 1948. During his 37-year telecommunications career he served in various capacities living in five different cities, which included his last posting as a Division Revenue Manager in Jackson, Miss. Retiring in 1985, Mr. Muse was best known for introducing computerized billing into AT&T, The Bell System in 1966.
Mr. Muse, a Mason, was a member of Mountain Brook Baptist Church and the Alabama Prisoners of War Association. He participated in many community activities and charities in each of the cities in which he served. This included the St. Labre Indian School, the Boy Scouts in Atlanta, Ga., Southern Bell Pioneers in Atlanta, Ga., and South Central Bell Pioneers in Birmingham, Ala., and Jackson, Miss.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 22 at 10 a.m. at Ridout's Valley Chapel in Homewood, Ala., with the funeral service afterward at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Forest Crest cemetery.
