Betty Bernard Alby, 85, of Birmingham, AL, passed away on December 25, 2023. She was born on June 27, 1938, in Franklin County, VA, to the late Bernard and Turner families. Betty was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend who will be deeply missed.
Betty had a vibrant and fun-loving personality. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and was known for her loyalty and sense of humor. Betty had a great love for food and enjoyed dining out at restaurants. She also had a passion for football and cherished Saturday football weekends. Her laughter and ability to find joy in life were infectious.
Betty graduated from Franklin County High School and went on to pursue higher education at the College of William and Mary and Roanoke College. She later embarked on a successful career as a system engineer at Regions Bank, where she dedicated 39 years of her life. In her free time, Betty enjoyed planning revitalization projects for Boones Mill and Franklin County. She also loved watching Auburn and Virginia Tech football games. Betty's hobbies were a reflection of her love for community and sports.
Her door and her kitchen were always open, welcoming her grandchildren’s friends, spouses, dogs, and extended family with open arms and homemade biscuits and sausage gravy, resulting in her well-earned reputation as “the coolest grandmother I’ve ever met.” She was the life of every party, wedding and family gathering, never shying away from a dance-off. The stories of challenges she would issue (and win) to her grandchildren’s unsuspecting new spouses will be told around dinner tables for years to come.
A memorial service will be held graveside at Mountain View Memorial Park on Friday, December 29th at 11 AM, assisted by the Flora Funeral Service in Rocky Mountain, VA. Dr. Bonny Dillon will be officiating at the graveside. A celebration of Betty's life will be held at a later date in Birmingham, AL for friends and family.
Betty is survived by her loving children, Steve Alby (Cay), Heather Alby Arceneaux (Tim), and Jackie Alby Gardner (Jud), as well as her cherished grandchildren, Laine Alby, Kendall Alby, Cayce Politis (Nikko), Bryn Gardner Lowe (Ryan), Lauren Gardner, and Morgan Gardner (Lizzie) and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wynn Alby.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that charitable donations be made to Vitiligo Support International (VSI) and the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis Phillips Pratt Memorial Fund.
The Ridout's Valley Chapel in Homewood, AL, is assisting the family during this difficult time.
May Betty Bernard Alby's soul rest in eternal peace, and may her memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved her.
