Terry was born on September 11, 1944 in Sandwich, IL, the son of Walter and Norma (Satter) Shaw. He graduated from Somonauk High School in Somonauk, IL in 1962. On January 15, 1966, he was united in marriage to Norma Northcutt on January 15, 1966 in San Diego, CA. Terry was known to his family as “Papa”.
After graduation, Terry enlisted in the U.S. Navy. His first boat assignment before “Nuke School” was in the USS Barbell SS580 in 1963 where he served with fellow shipmate Ed Irwin. In 1962, he was on the USS Snook SSN 592. In 1967, he was on the USS Sperry AS12. Lastly, in 1969, he was on the USS Mariano G. Vallejo SSBN658. After 8 years in the Navy, Terry worked for Commonwealth Edison in Illinois for 7 years.
In 1977, he enrolled at Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, desiring to learn God’s word and be able to teach it to others. He graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor’s degree in Theology. While attending college he was bivocational pastor for 3 years at Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church in Reeds Spring, MO.
In 1981, Terry moved his family to Central Missouri. He was employed by Ameren UE at the nuclear power plant near Fulton. By surprise, there was his buddy, Ed Irwin again! Ed and Sue have been a blessing. Terry retired from Ameren in December 1999 as a Quality Control Supervisor. After retiring, Terry was self employed at his cabinet shop with Norma and his children for 10 years. Later, he worked at Menards in Columbia, MO. Then he worked at FRDC as PPSII, as the plant supervisor for four and a half years.
During the first ten years of living in New Bloomfield, Terry was the bivocational pastor of the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. He also served the community from time to time as an alderman or as mayor on the city council. He was currently mayor at the time of his passing.
In June 2018, Terry was diagnosed with non-small lung cancer. His love and faith in Jesus to heal; whether healing comes as a miracle or in heaven; that faith saw him through four and a half years.
Dr. Shadi Haddadin at JCMG and his staff are professional and did a wonderful job taking care of Terry. He loved them all. As well as the other doctors and teams did at JCMG.
Thank you everyone for the prayers and moral support you’ve offered as well as food and visits.
