Richard F. Hull, loving father and grandfather, passed away on July 12th, at the age of 89. Born in New York, New York, on November 8, 1931 to Washington and Emily Hull, Richard lived a rewarding, full life, one of purpose and intention. His accomplishments, dreams, and services to family, friends, and country gave his life deep meaning and have created a legacy that is a guiding example to others.
Richard attended the University of Virginia and, in 1950, he joined his beloved United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. After his time in the Corps he entered the insurance business in New York City, then later transferred to Alexandria, Virginia. In 1962, Richard moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he founded Hull & Company and built his venture from the ground up into one of the largest and most successful excess and surplus lines wholesale insurance brokerage businesses of its time.
He sold the company in 2005 and began to enjoy the fruits of his labor by traveling extensively, especially on the water. His fondness for the sea would feed a lifelong passion for fishing and boating. While he loved exploring all parts of the world, the Bahamas proved the place he loved the most. Often he would claim that there were “No more beautiful waters in the world” than those of his cherished Bahamas.
Richard is survived by Pauline FitzPatrick, his long-time partner; his children Christopher and David Hull, Susan Steinkamp Jowers, Mark Steinkamp, and Stephanie Carmichael. He is also survived by his grandchildren Lindsey and Alison Jowers, Meagan and Catherine Steinkamp, Elizabeth Hull Slima, Stephen Hull, Danielle and Melissa Hull, Ariana, Aidan, and Richard F. Hull II, and Harry J Carmichael IV. He loved them all deeply, considering them a blessing in a life fully lived.
Special thanks to our Earthly Saints, those who help us each and every day and with whom Dick relied on completely: Luningning Robles, Rebecca Pastoral, and Arthur Robles.
A memorial service will be held in his honor on Friday July 23rd, at 11:00am, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida at Church by the Sea, 2700 Mayan Drive, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33316
