John Joseph Cormier, Jr; of Dania Beach, Florida, formerly of Massapequa Park, Long Island, New York and Cranston, Rhode Island passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at Majestic Memory Care Center in Hollywood, Florida. He was 84 years of age. His beloved wife of 66 years, Laurina Daisy (Mitchell) Cormier died on January 29, 2015.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island on January 10, 1932, son of John J. and Eva (Darrow) Cormier. Raised in Providence, John attended LaSalle Academy, where he was a member of the Rams' Football team. He was known by his teammates as "Speedy Cormier"
Following High School he met and married Laurina Daisy Mitchell and lived in Bristol, Coventry and Cranston, Rhode Island. Later, they moved their family to Massapequa Park, New York and worked as a Branch Manager for the Hoover Corporation. John retired in 1987 from Nassau Downs Regional Off Track Betting Corporation. He then moved to Florida in 1987 where he enjoyed retirement and family. John was an avid golfer, well traveled , and created beautiful oil paintings for his family.
Survivors include his eight children, John S. (Wendy) Cormier, Craig D. (Vickie) Cormier, Deborah L. (Todd) Fopiano, Wayne D. (Mary) Cormier, Valarie L. (Frank) Monti, Brett W. (Karen) Cormier, Stephanie (Todd) Amann and Joanne Cormier , brother, Thomas J. Cormier. Also survived by 22 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, John was preceded in death by a brother, William H. Cormier.
