Royden "Roy" E. Jones Jr.

Hamilton, Michigan - Commander Royden E. Jones, Jr., a devoted husband, loving father, esteemed public servant, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2024, surrounded by his wife and children.

Born on May 27, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, Roy attended Detroit Public Schools, The University of Michigan, and graduated Wayne State University with a degree in law. While attending law school at Wayne State University, Roy worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor for the City of Detroit Parks and Recreation department, embodying his love for encouraging others and fostering self discipline.

Roy's military service was a testament to his patriotism and leadership. After graduating from WSU, he attended Officer Candidate School (OCS) and was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the USS Vancouver out of San Diego. After his tour to Vietnam, he served at the AntiSubmarine Warfare School in San Diego. He left active duty and joined the Reserves where he worked in Naval Intelligence until his retirement from the Navy after decades of dedicated service, having reached the rank of Commander.

Roy's journey through life was marked by a dedication to justice, service, and learning. He began his legal career as an Attorney Referee at the Juvenile Court in Port Huron, Michigan, where he demonstrated a commitment to advocating for vulnerable youth. Additionally, he served as the President of the local Kiwanis in Port Huron, furthering his dedication to community service. Later, he moved with his family to Rochester Hills, where he accepted a position at the Oakland County Friend of the Court, continuing his passion for fairness and compassion.

Aside from his professional achievements, Roy was an avid reader with a passion for history. His retirement years were filled with spending cherished moments with each of his grandchildren and reconnecting with lifelong friends from Edison Elementary, with whom he shared countless memories and stories over lunches. His love for life and laughter was evident in these gatherings, where old tales and new adventures were shared with joy. After 50 years, there were some stories that even the wives didn’t know about…remember the Corvette?

Roy is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years Valerie, his cherished children Trey (Jenny), Stephanie Anne (Travis), and Hillary Arlene; grandchildren Joshua Michael, Megan Alea, Ellen Rose and Cora Isabella, and his brother, Ronald (Sharon). In addition to his immediate family, he is also survived by a host of family members and friends who will forever cherish his memory. He was predeceased by his parents, Royden Sr. and Dorothy, and his brother, Rick.

In honoring Roy's memory, a memorial service will be held on Monday, May 6 at 1pm at Grace Episcopal Church in Holland, MI. Contributions in his name may be made to the Arc of Oakland County, a non-profit that advocates for the rights and full participation of all children and adults with intellectual and other related developmental disabilities. This is a cause that Roy supported for decades, including his time on the Board of Directors, in recognition for everything that The Arc provided to his brother, Rick. Alternatively, a donation to a charity of your choosing. The family would appreciate you respecting their wishes for no flowers.
