Disease.
Pete was born in Vinkeveen, the Netherlands, one of eight siblings, and migrated with his family in 1953 to Pella, Iowa. He graduated from Dordt College, married June Mulder in 1969 and then attended Calvin Theological Seminary. His first church was in Hospers, Iowa, followed by a call to Zion CRC in Oshawa, Ontario, and then to Maranatha CRC in Woodstock, Ontario. In 1991 the DeHaan family moved to
Holland, Michigan, where “Pastor Pete” served at Maple Avenue CRC and Maple
Avenue Ministries. Later he served at Bravo CRC in Fennville, Michigan, and transitioned to workplace chaplaincy. He is fondly remembered for breaking out in song during sermons, his friendly smile and his unfailing pastoral care to anyone in need. He retired in 2019 but continued to visit members of his former congregations for some time after that.
Peter was predeceased by his parents, Case and Nelly, his brother Case and his sister Tina.
He is survived by his wife June, his remaining brothers and sister, and his children, Jonathan of Shizuoka, Japan, married to Yuka Yoshimura (Noah and
Sana), Patricia of Tacoma, Washington, married to Yanni Papadopoulos (Silas and
Elena), and Daniel of Byron Center, Michigan, married to Michele VanStedum (Jacob).
A Celebration of Life will be held in August 2023. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. (https://www.alz.org/get-involved-now/donate).
