She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin “Mers” L. Mersman in January 2005; parents George Gosselar and Francis (Dornbos) Gosselar; brother, Robert (Evelyn) Gosselar; sister, Joyce (Gosselar) (David) Hyma, sons David Mersman, Douglas Mersman, and Wesley Mersman, brother-in-law Robert Mersman, and sister-in-law Ruth (Mersman) Browneye. She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Jim) Mieras, daughter-in-law Luanne Mersman, five grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, three nieces, and one nephew.
Maxine was born on December 17, 1922, in Holland. She attended Holland Public Schools and lived in this area her entire lifetime. Her parents owned an IGA grocery business in town, where she worked for 37 years. She also enjoyed a musical and radio ministry for 30 years. Maxine worked with the City Mission and was a speaker for area Christian Women’s Clubs. She taught Sunday school for many years and also volunteered at Evergreen Commons. Throughout her life, she attended Immanuel Baptist Church, Zeeland Baptist Church, Rose Park Baptist Church, and Central Wesleyan Church. Maxine enjoyed traveling with “Mers,” staying active, and spending time with family. She was a friend to many, had a contagious energy, and enjoyed life to the fullest.
Visitation will be held at Lakeshore Memorial Services, 11939 James Street in Holland, from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, with a service following at 2:30 p.m. Reverend Robert Terpstra will be officiating the memorial.
