He was born on March 28, 1941 in Paragould, AR to the late Lester and Mary (Livesay) White. In 1946, the family moved to Michigan where he spent much of his childhood in Clio, MI.
A strong believer in higher education, Gary attended Central Michigan University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration. He participated in the ROTC program while attending CMU and most importantly, met his future wife and love of his life, Phila Kirkbride.
After graduating from CMU, Gary and Phila married in 1964. Gary entered the Army the same year as a second lieutenant in the 18th Airborne Corps and rose to the rank of captain over his tenure in the service.
Following his honorable discharge from the military in 1967, Gary began his professional career in the human resources field. His personable nature, kindness, and patience made him a natural for working in human resources. While starting his professional career, Gary also returned to school to earn his master’s in business administration from Wayne State University in 1969.
A devoted husband and father, Gary was always present for his family. He shared his love of sports with his three sons and actively supported them with words of encouragement as well as coaching various athletic teams. Later in life he continued to provide support by providing guidance on higher education and career decisions.
In his spare time, Gary was an avid golfer and also enjoyed traveling with Phila to various locations in the U.S. and around the world including Africa, Australia, China, New Zealand, and numerous trips to Europe. Closer to home, he cherished spending time with family at the cabin at Hardy Dam. He also enjoyed attending any and all events and activities that involved his grandchildren.
Gary also found time to play an active role in the Holland community, serving on the board of directors for various organizations, including Holland Hospital, Tulip Time, PARDA Credit Union, and the Holland Country Club. He was also an active member of the Lions Club. In addition, Gary was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Holland and was involved in various church committees.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and brother Marlin White. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Phila; sons Steve (Kristen) White, Dan (Dawn) White, and Brian (Spring) White. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for Gary will be held at First United Methodist Church in Holland on January 20. Visitation will take place at 10 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. with a luncheon being held at the church after the service.
