David E. Rhoda, born January 5, 1932 to Albert and Marie Rhoda in Grand Rapids, walked into Glory on November 28, 2014 with his loving family at his side. After the family moved to Holland, where he attended Holland Christian High School, Dave met the love of his life, Shirley Essenburg. They were married June 18, 1954.
He is survived by Shirley; their 5 children: Stephen (Kellie Martin), Shari (John Piwowar), David Scott, Daniel (Lori Overway) and Suzanne (Jerry Ballinger); 4 grandchildren: Kristen Smith (Nathan, Matthew & Saylor), Joshua (Rachel Zoerhof) (Kameron, Bryce & Greyson), Travis (Travis, Jr.,) and Mitchell; Sister: Jeanette Vanden Bosch; Brother: Ronald (Shirley), all who live in Holland, which Dave was happy to point out to anyone who would listen; In-laws: Roger Essenburg, Robert Essenburg, Betty Hamlin, and Lynn Henigan; Sister-in-law Coral Rhoda, many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Thomas, Robert, William and Richard and a grandson Aaron Rhoda in 2013.
After planting the Tulip Lanes for the City of Holland for many years, Dave never lost his love for gardening. Dave retired from Bradford Paper Co. in 1994 and The Goodies Factory in 2013. Dave lived his life for his wife and family, enjoying camping, gardening and fishing with his grandsons and just being with all of his family. When Dave entered a room it was lit up by his smile and sense of humor. His great-grandchildren will miss their “Pops” and the enjoyable times they all spent together.
A memorial service will be 4:30pm Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Christ Memorial Church, 585 Graafschap Rd.
Visitation will be Sunday, November 30, from 3-6:00pm at Lakeshore Memorial Services, 11939 James St.
