Dave was a true intellectual, writer, learner and artist. He was a sports fan who especially loved rooting for the Detroit Tigers. He will be missed for spirited debates, his pauses, his questions, and intentional words on a variety of topics with family and friends. A teacher and mentor, he taught in many schools throughout his career including, Sebewaing (MI), Dallas (TX), Milwaukee (WI), Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Seoul. Dave never found a stream or river, nor ocean or sea he did not revere.
He was preceded in death by his father Eldor Bickel; and an infant son at birth, Aaron Bickel.
Dave is survived by his wife Chris of 43 years; daughters, Jenni (Gerry) Renaud of Redford, Joanna Bickel of Houston, and Meggen (Yoshi) Saka of Grand Rapids; 2 granddaughters, Audrey and Molly; his mother Dorothy Bickel; siblings, Marj (Gary) Janetzke, Lois (Neil) Mytas, Jon (Sue) Bickel, Nate (Julie) Bickel, Kathy (Dave) Wilde, Tim (Pam) Bickel, and Miriam (Keith) Haney; many extended family and friends.
A memorial service to celebrate David's life is planned for 2p.m., Friday, July 1, 2016 at Zion Lutheran Church, 77 West 32nd Street, Holland, MI.
