Mr. Smith was retired from DuPont after 51 years of service. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Army where he received the Purple Heart.
He was a member of First Centenary Church where he participated in “Meals on Wheels”; He was also a member of the Lions Club International; the Whitwell Masonic Lodge; the VFW Post 4848; American Legion Post 159.
In his younger days, he and his wife were avid square dancers.
His two sons-in-law, Mike Duke and Paul Maliska and two sisters preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Lillian Smith; son, John (Vickie) Smith of Chattanooga; daughters, Diane Duke of Lookout Mountain; Susan Maliska of Hayesville, North Carolina; Cathie Carter of Chattanooga; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Bernice Smith of Pottstown, Pennsylvania; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the North Chapel with Dr. David Harr officiating. Burial will follow at Red Hill Cemetery in Whitwell, Tennessee.
The family will receive friends Friday from 4-8 p.m. and Saturday from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Centenary Church.
