He was of the Baptist faith and served in the Navy for 4 years. He was a mason at Hill City. He also worked at Norfolk and Southern Railroad where he retired after 40 years.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Granville Lee and Lucille Barron Ayers, nephew, Mitchell Ayers and son- in- law Glenn Underwood.
Survivors include his daughter Lisa Ayers Underwood, son, Ruel Lee (MaryElan) Ayers II, four grandchildren, Sommer (Adam) Powers, Ashley Underwood, Erica (Bryan) Boggess, Tyler Underwood, 7 great grandchildren, Dylan Boggess, Lankston Ayers, Shealee Underwood, Hunter Glenn Boggess, Tripp Underwood, Kaele Powers, Alan Underwood, 2 brothers, Tommy (Peggy) Ayers, Charles (Alicia) Ayers, 2 sisters, Cathren Bonds, Debra (Jack) Love and a very very special friend Anita Kelly.
The family will receive friends Sunday, October 16th from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, at North Chapel of Chattanooga funeral home.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3:00 pm at the funeral home.
Interment will follow at Chattanooga Memorial Park.
