Roland was born on July 17, 1923 in Chattanooga to the late Robert and Elvie Smith. He served our country during World War II in the Unites States Army where he was awarded the American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and two Bronze Stars. Roland was a Structural Steel Draftsman. He was instrumental in founding and building Post Oak Baptist Church where he held his membership, taught Sunday School and was interim choir director. He was a member of the Quitman Masonic Lodge in Ringgold, F&AM # 106 and the Chattanooga Scottish Rite. Roland was a Commodore with the former Loret Boat Club.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn Smith; grandson, Victor Graham; brother, Albert Smith; and sister, Frances Pursley;
Roland is survived by his wife, Theresa Smith; children, Diane (John) Graves, Terry (Teena) Smith, Patty (Larry) Graham, Danny (Janice) Smith and Suzanne (the late Rick) Culpepper; 19 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; and 7 nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm on Friday, August 1 and 11 am to 1 pm on Saturday at the North Chapel.
A celebration of life service for Roland will follow at 1 pm on Saturday at the funeral home chapel with Pastor Chris Hayes officiating. Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
