Robert Valton Thacker was born October 14, 1919 where he was reared on farms in Forsyth County, North Carolina. After high school he was employed as a stock boy at the local Kress store in Winston-Salem. After working in 5 stores he became manager in 5 additional stores, coming to Chattanooga in 1958.
He left Kress in 1962 and formed a partnership “Style-Crest Furniture” making upholstered goods. The plant was sold in 1972 and he entered retirement.
He was a veteran of WWII, a past president of the Optimist Club, and a member of the First Babtist Church in Chattanooga. In 1960 he married Laura Selcer Clark who died in 2008. His first wife Ruby Sink died in 1957.
Surviving are daughter Betsy (Wayne) Merritt, son Mike ( Diana) Thacker, and beloved step daughter Ann (Bob) Beatty, also 8 grand Children, 20 great-grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
His burial in Pitts Cemetery at Falling Water Cumberland Presbyterian Church has been made according to his wishes next to his dear wife Laura; with deepest regards to friends and associates he leaves to join his Maker.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
