He was a lifelong citizen of Chattanooga being born in Alton Park, and graduated from Central High School. He joined the Navy in late 1943, serving in the Pacific to the end of the World War II. “Gene” was an IBEW member of over 50 years, employed by DuPont, TVA, and several local electrical contractors.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Katherine Louise “Tootsie” Carroll; parents, Edward and Ethel Carroll; brother and wife, Jimmy and Eva Carroll.
“Gene” is survived by his daughter, Margo and husband Dr. Julian Ahler; grandsons, Robert and wife Dr. Kristan Ahler and Christopher Ahler, all of the Harriman area.
The family will receive friends from 11 to 12 pm (noon) on Monday, April 9, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
A graveside service for Robert will follow at 12:30 pm on Monday at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Reverend Paul Young officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 601 Clinton Street, Harriman, TN 37748.
