He was preceded in death by his first wife Betty Welsh (mother of his daughter Cheryl).
Survived by his wife Billie Messner-Welsh, daughter Cheryl Byrns (Scott). Grandchildren Chris Byrns, Brandon Byrns and Tony Anetrella, and 5 great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Elliott, Joseph, Cora and Olivia.
He was born in Columbus Ohio and graduated from Ohio State University. He spent his career working in commercial photography.
Ray had a positive outlook, and always had a smile. He treasured time spent with his family and loved ones and his many pets through the years. His love and kindness will be missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be Saturday, May 1, from 12- 2 at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 2 pm at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
