Peggy Coleman Shoemaker, 83, went to be with the Lord on June 17. She was preceded in death by her husband Harry Maxwell Shoemaker III, her parents Arthur Arnold and Lucia Coleman, and her sister Dorothy Hartman. She was a member of Hixson United Methodist Church.
Those left to cherish her memory are daughter Luci Shoemaker (Robert) Stone of Hixson; daughter Lori Shoemaker, stationed in Seoul, Korea; four grandchildren, Daniel and Ellen Stone, of Hixson, and Michael and Elizabeth Horan, of Seoul; sister-in-law Cynthia Shoemaker, of Boston; several nephews, a niece, and many other relatives and special friends.
Born in Columbus, Georgia, she moved to Chattanooga as a child and graduated from Red Bank High School in 1948 where she was a star basketball player. She worked at Provident Life Insurance Company for several years before her marriage. Through the years, she was active in a number of bridge clubs, garden clubs, neighborhood and golf clubs, class reunion committees, and the Hamilton Place YMCA Silver Sneakers group through which she developed a wide circle of beloved friends. She was an active member of Rivermont Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga for many years before moving to Ringgold, Georgia. There she was a member of Boynton United Methodist Church for over 20 years. When she returned to the Chattanooga community , she became active in Hixson United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Upper Room Sunday School Class.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m on Thursday, June 19 at the North Chapel of the Chattanooga Funeral Home in Hixson.
Services will be held at 12:30pm on Friday, June 20 in the North Chapel Chattanooga Funeral Home with Rev. Reed Shell officiating. Burial will follow at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Upper Room Sunday School Class of Hixson United Methodist Church.
