Mary M. (Pitts) Helton, 95, passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at CHI Memorial North Park Hospital. She was born 9/9/1924 in Chattanooga, TN. She was the daughter of the former Robert B. Pitts and Daisy Lee (Hughes) Pitts of Falling Water, TN. She was a 1942 graduate of Hixson High School and a graduate of Edmonson School of Business. She was married to Leon Helton, a Navy veteran, who preceded her in death. She was the sister of Robert Lee Pitts (deceased) of Cincinnati, OH and is survived by her sister Barbara Ann Ridge Rogers of Chattanooga, TN. She is also survived by her two children: Diane (Landon) Hartman of Hixson, TN and Mark C. (Susie) Helton of Inverness, FL, four grandchildren: Amy (Scott) York, Chris (Debra) Hartman, Jessi (Cc) Harvey and Zack (Sarah) Helton, six Great-Grandchildren: Alex, Taylor, Jarod, Brittney, Peyton and Callen and many nieces and nephews. She was a long time member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Hixson, TN. She was living at Regency House Assisted Living in Hixson, TN prior to her death.
Mary is under the care of Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel, 5401 Hwy. 153, Hixson, TN and she will be buried at the Chattanooga National Cemetery, Chattanooga, TN. Due to the current pandemic there will not be a funeral or visitation but there will be a Memorial Service (to be announced at a later date) at St. Alban's Episcopal Church.
She was very active in her church. She served on the Vestry for many years, was in the Stephens Ministry for several years, attended Cursillo and was active in the Altar Guild as well as a book study group up until 2 years ago. Mary led a very full and active life in her 95 years. Over the years she had many hobbies: fishing, camping, bowling, golfing, tennis, hiking, crafting, sewing, cake decorating and was an excellent artist. She was a military wife and she and husband, Leon and family were stationed on several military bases in the U.S and overseas. She worked in clerical work in several fields during her adult life as well as a cake decorator in her later life. Mary was a "people person". She loved helping people and made friends everywhere she went and was a very beloved member of the community. She loved to dance and was a member of Senior Neighbors where she did ball room dancing and was a member of a square dancing team. She was a member of a hiking club and she also participated in the Senior Olympics. In her late 70's and 80's she won many gold and silver medals in Archery, Table Tennis and Speed Walking and went to the state Senior Olympics and won a gold medal there in Archery.
Mary will be greatly missed by all of her family and her many, many friends.
