Margaret McClure passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 3, 2021 at her home in Hixson, TN at age 91. She was an incredibly strong woman with a ‘will of iron’. She was born in Hickory Grove, SC on November 5, 1929 to the late Albert W. and Grace Goforth Smarr.
Margaret graduated from Spartanburg General Hospital as a Registered Nurse in 1950. She married William Carol McClure on July 11, 1954. They moved to Germany while Bill (William Carol) served in the Korean War. Following his service, she supported the family while Bill received his Master’s degree from the University of South Carolina. Following his service with the army and graduation from USC, they lived in South Carolina, Florida, Wyoming and finally Tennessee.
Margaret has lived in Hixson since 1972 and has been an active member of Burks United Methodist Church. She served for “Young at Heart”, and was involved with “Burks Boy Scouts Troupe”. She was also a member of the church choir. She loved to sing. Upon moving to Chattanooga, she continued her nursing career and worked for Erlanger Hospital in “Labor and Delivery”. She loved babies. Doctors often commented on her dedication and skills as a nurse.
Towards the end of her life, Margaret was housebound, but always loved to sing and found enjoyment in the little things in life. She and her family watched the Sound of Music, Sister Act and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers numerous times and sang along. She loved to sit on her deck, watch the birds and sing.
Margaret was also preceded in death by her siblings, Colonel Albert W. Smarr Jr., Frances Brown, and Bill Smarr.
She is survived by her children, Carol Raburn, Patti McClure, Mike McClure, and Marshall McClure, siblings, Myrle Jett and Mary Bankhead, grandchildren, Jonathan Raburn, Molly McClure, and Chloe McClure.
